Event Description:

Saturday, August 19, 2023, We will restart the annual QUARQ Iron Creek Triathlon. Iron Creek Campground is roughly thirteen miles from Spearfish, SD and nestled in the Northern end of the beautiful Black Hills of South Dakota.

The course features a 1000m swim, 22k mountain bike and an 8k run. The swim is a spectator-friendly, two-lap course, with a short exit between laps, at scenic Iron Creek Lake. The ride climbs from Iron Creek Lake up to the Old Baldy trail system in the Black Hills National Forest. The ride is entirely within forested areas, so bring your technical skills and expect lots of single-track. After descending back to Iron Creek Lake, the race goes to a challenging one-lap run around the lake, where spectators cheer on the racers as they tackle difficult hill sections on pf the run.

Iron Creek Lake’s cabins and camps sites are available race weekend. Spearfish also has many great hotels and restaurants and is near gambling in historic Deadwood, the great carvings of Mount Rushmore and Crazy Horse, the 114-mile Mickelson trail and countless miles of single-track.

Race Categories

Solo – Standard solo triathlon. No sharing, keep all the fun for yourself.
Relay – Relay Team Race. Two and 3 person teams allowed. All female teams will be scored female. All male or mixed teams will be scored male. Relay teams may use a swimmer from the solo race (must register solo and relay separately).

Directions

The quickest way to access Iron Creek Lake is to take Exit 8 off Interstate 90 on the west edge of Spearfish and head south. McGuigan Road turns into Tinton Road a couple miles south. After traveling about 13 miles south, a wooden sign will indicate where to turn right or west onto Beaver Creek Road. Just a half mile or so down this road, and another wooden sign marks a left-hand turn onto Iron Creek Road which leads directly to the lake.

The lake can also be accessed from Spearfish Canyon by following the signs just west of Roughlock Falls.

Lodging

Iron Creek Lake has campsites and cabins for rent. This is the ideal place to stay for the race, but space is limited so reserve you spot quickly. The next best is to stay at one of the many hotels in Spearfish.
